What is the ED PEER volunteer program?

The ED PEER Program volunteers work in a number of roles assisting patients and staff in an emergency department setting. The ED PEER position is a personally rewarding and valuable experience for participants.

The ED PEER Program Position

The following roles are available to ED PEER Program members:

  • Team Center Volunteer - Round on patients, answer call lights, assist ED personnel in maintaining an efficient and welcoming environment
  • Triage/Triage Treatment Volunteer - Assist triage nurses with patients waiting to be seen, placing patients in ED rooms, assist with visitors and families, round on patients
  • Experienced ED PEER volunteers have the opportunity to train for:
    • Stab. Room Recorder - Record events as they happen in the Stabilization Room
    • Faculty Assistant – Work alongside our ED Faculty Physician during patient rounds
  • Stab. Room Recorder - Record events as they happen in the Stabilization Room (experienced volunteers only)
  • Potential leadership opportunities within the ED PEER program
  • Other tasks and special projects as needed

Why should you choose the ED PEER Program?

In comparison to other hospital emergency department volunteer programs in the Twin Cities, the HCMC ED PEER program offers a more inclusive immersion into the environment of an emergency department. Hennepin County Medical Center is Minnesota’s premier Level One Trauma Center, and with 109,876 Emergency Services visits in 2015 is the busiest ED in the state. The ED PEER Program encompasses approximately 120 volunteers who work in different areas throughout the emergency department. Participants work closely with staff, patients and other volunteers in the emergency department. The ED PEER program also offers a flexible option for volunteers to schedule their own shifts, or they may choose a recurring, weekly shift.


  • Commitment of 4 hours per week, for a minimum of 60 hours total
  • Maintain work schedule online
  • Stay current on mandatory training and remain up-to-date with health requirements
  • $10 hospital uniform fee
  • Optional: May attend medically-related informational sessions with nurses and physicians


  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • 18 years of age at time of application
  • No felony convictions. Must successfully pass a background investigation.
  • Complete the health screening process, as detailed below

Selection Procedure

The selection process consists of an online application, two letters of reference, a background check, and a health screening. Informal interviews will be conducted with the program coordinators after applicants have submitted a complete application. Applicants will not be invited to interview until they have completed all of the application requirements.


Newly appointed ED PEER Program members will be required to attend orientation sessions scheduled by the Program Coordinator. One 4-hour shadow shift with an ED Health Care Assistant (HCA) in the ED completes your orientation.

Reference letters should be either mailed directly to the ED PEER Coordinator from the person writing the letter, or emailed to edpeercoordinator@hcmed.org.  All other application materials should be printed, completed, and mailed to the ED PEER Coordinator at the listed address.
